Battle at Autobot City:
Back at Autobot City, our attention is focused on Perceptor from the first two seasons of the cartoon, who transforms into telescope mode, and spots the Decepticons rapidly approaching the city. Then he converts back to robot mode, and this is where we are introduced to more of the new faces who did not appear in the previous seasons, and were essentially meant to replace the older characters to sell new toys. And this batch of new Autobots consist of Ultra-Magnus (voiced by Robert Stack), Arcee (voiced by Susan Blu), Springer (voiced by Neil Ross), and Blurr, voiced by (John Moschitta Jr.) As they arrive to the scene, Perceptor informs them that he “indicates distinct tactical deficiency.” Ultra-Magnus replies “In other words, Perceptor…” to which Springer adds “We’re outnumbered!” And yeah, those words sum it up perfectly because the Autobots are being slaughtered by this point. Springer opens one of his arms to reveal a blaster inside which shoots at Starcream, who returns fire. But they avoid the blast just in time as an explosion occurs behind Ultra Magnus, who gets back on his feet, and orders Springer and Arcee to have Autobot City on defense mode. He also tells Perceptor to have Blaster to contact Optimus Prime for reinforcements. Then Blurr comes into the scene, and in his speedy pace of speech, asks Ultra-Magnus what he can do to help. Now, even as a kid, I struggled to catch every word that Blurr was saying. Now, I don’t particularly dislike Blurr as a character. But the thing is he talks so fast that his speech is kind of incomprehensible at times. I can sort of catch certain words he says, but for the most part, I have a hard time understanding his lines of dialogue. Ultra-Magnus says that Blurr can help him “alert the others”, to which Blurr agrees, and they race off to carry out their assigned tasks. But Arcee is worried that Hotrod and Kup are outside the city. Her infrared scanners pick up the two Autobots in vehicle mode racing for the city while being chased by Decepticons. But Springer tells her that they can’t wait for them, and they’ll have to take care of themselves. And so Springer and Arcee race off to carry out the task given to them by Ultra-Magnus, and set Autobot City for attack mode. The city transforms into a battle station as the Decepticons near the city, and begin their assault. And once again we get a great example on how well the animation was done in this film, as we see the mechanism coming together piece by piece, along with gears turning and pistons moving. The way it’s done is so spectacular. As that’s going on, Springer and Arcee are running from Starscream in jet mode, who is hot on their trail. As he pursues them, he frantically fires at them, missing with each shot (somehow), and exclaims “Pathetic fools! There’s no escape!” However, Springer and Arcee manage to elude their pursuer, and Starscream finds himself caught in-between two walls closing in on him. He flies out, but gets his leg caught, and struggles to break free as two other walls close in on him. Starscream then shoots his leg to free himself from the walls before they close in, exclaiming “OW! MY FOOT!” as he flies away. Arcee is inside the base, programing the laser guns and plasma cannons to activate. And as Megatron tries to blast open a door with his plasma cannon, he calls for the Insecticons to chew open the door. But just then, Hotrod and Kup, still in their vehicle modes, plow right through the Insecticons (with Kup crushing one’s head), and make their way into the door before a second door closes shut behind them.

Seen in an overhead view, the battle is literally tearing up the city. And… As I looked closely, I could have SWORN I saw Ironhide flying by briefly. Hang on a second! Ironhide just got his head blown off by Megatron! Isn’t he supposed to be dead? Meh, I guess this was a fuck up that Toei didn’t feel like fixing. Or maybe it was a mistake on the animator’s part. Who knows? So anyway, as the Decepticons blitzkrieg the entire city, our focus is then directed to Blaster, the Autobot counterpart to Soundwave, who seems to be having the time of his life in the midst of the chaos. Just then, Perceptor shows up, and Blaster inquires “Hey, Perceptor! What’s shaking? Other than this fortress?” to which Perceptor replies “Blaster! Ultra-Magnus sent over to contact Optimus Prime on Moon Base 1!” Blaster agrees, types down a few keys, transforms into a cassette player, and sends a long distance distress message to Optimus Prime. The Decepticons are in the middle of ravaging the fortress. But in the midst of their rampage, Megatron hears the distress message, and orders Soundwave to deal with it. Soundwave obeys the command, and sends Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage, and Ratbat to stop Blaster from calling for reinforcements. The cassettes fly out of Soundwave’s chest compartment, and change to robot mode as they intercept Blaster. But I spotted an error here. Apparently, in one shot, Rumble was colored in Frenzy’s color scheme. So anyway, as the cassette robots intercept, they yank off the satellite dish, Rumble says “First we crash the show, then we crack the nuts inside!” (which may or may not sexually sound suggestive). Then they hammer their way into the control center, and attack Blaster and Perceptor. Perceptor tells Blaster to run for it, but Blaster says “No way! Two can play!” and kicks Ravage away as he lunges for him. Then he summons his own cassette robots; Ramhorn, Steel Jaw, Eject, and Rewind to fight off Soundwave’s cassette robots. As they battle each other, Perceptor asks Blaster if he got through to Prime, to which Blaster replies “I hope so. Because if I didn’t, we’re all gonna look like burned out toaster ovens.” Meanwhile, as the war in Autobot City grows evermore chaotic and catastrophic, Blurr is seen going from window to window, shooting at random enemies. And it is here were gives us more of his fast-paced and incomprehensible lines of dialogue. The only part I could understand is when he says “It leads us nowhere! That’s where!” In the heart of the city, the Decepticons then regroup. And inside a hangar, Springer is seen pushing a giant launcher, but is having difficulty doing so. Arcee is seen dragging the bodies of Windcharger and Wheeljack (yes, they’re dead too unfortunately). Springer tells Arcee to help him push the launcher into the correct place so they can use it to fight back. Just then, Hotrod, Kup, and Daniel arrive to the scene to hand a land. With all their combined strength, they manage to get the machine into the correct place. Daniel climbs up a ladder, and watches as Megatron orders the Constructicons to merge into Devastator to further ravage the city. Daniel warns the Autobots, and as Devastator comes in for the kill, he exclaims “PREPARE FOR EXTERMINATION!” He then proceeds to crush a rotating turret with one hand, and then bangs mercilessly on a tall building. Springer says “I got better things to tonight than die!” (one of the best lines in the entire movie BTW) Then he places a missile in place, and launches it at Devastator. But this doesn’t even phase him, and he continues to mercilessly tear at the building. Springer than fires a few more rounds at Devastator and the Decepticons. But Devastator throws a piece of the building at the area where the missiles were coming from and wrecks the building, forcing everybody inside to evacuate. The war continues on as the two factions destroy the entire city. The next morning, Autobot City is now in ruins. But Megatron and the Decepticons have the upperhand, and continue their rampage. Devastator breaks his way through the barriers, and Megatron aims his blaster. But just then, a shuttle flies into view. Optimus Prime orders the Dinobots to engage Devastator, and Grimlock says “Me Grimlock love challenge!” They dive out of the shuttle, and engage with Devastator, who single handedly beats them senseless with little effort. Well, except for Slag of course, who manages to pummel him to the wall. But Devastator pretty much kicks everybody’s asses.

Optimus Prime vs. Megatron:
And now here’s what is perhaps one of the most epic moments in the entire movie, where Optimus Prime is seen among the wreckage along with Hound and Sunstreaker in the background (who are never seen or mentioned again beyond this point), and says “Megatron must be stopped… No matter the cost…” And then he transforms into truck mode, and rides down the path towards the ruins of Autobot City, set to the song “The Touch” by “Stan Bush”, which by the way, is one of the BEST SONGS IN THE ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK! So anyway, as Optimus races his way through the fortress, he plows through some of the Decepticons, and proceeds to kick their asses with surprisingly little effort considering their numbers. They fire laser at him (which don’t seem to phase him for some reason). But as he transforms to robot mode, Optimus takes out his plasma rifle, and easily disposes of the Decepticons by shooting them down. Now if that isn’t badass, I don’t know what is. And so after finishing with them, Optimus confronts Megatron. They exchange a few words with each other, and it is here where Optimus says one of his best and most memorable lines ever; “One shall stand, one shall fall.” Megatron asks “Why throw away your life so recklessly!?” to which Optimus replies “That’s a question you should ask yourself, Megatron.” The latter exclaims “No! I’ll crush you with my bare hands!” And so the two engage in a one on one fight to the death. And as they battle each other, Hotrod exclaims “I’ve got to help Prime!” But Kup replies “Stay away, lad! That’s Prime’s fight!” And well… Now that I think of it, I think Hotrod REALLY SHOULD HAVE listened to him because, he clearly didn’t know what he was doing. But I’ll get to that in a second. Optimus Prime and Megatron go at it, and literally beat the shit out of each other in this scene. Optimus pummels Megatron against the wall, but Megatron grabs hold of a stick of sorts (I’m guessing it’s made of metal because there’s no trees in the city), and throws it at Optimus’ midsection, impaling him. Megatron attempts to blast him, but Optimus dodges the blast, and beats him against the wall. Megatron grabs a lightsaber (which just so happened to be lying there for some reason), and uses it to cut through the side of Optimus’ midsection. As Megatron jumps up high and dives in for the kill, Optimus uppercuts him, and he lands on his back. As Optimus comes in, Megatron kicks him with both legs, and grabs at him, saying “I’ll rip out your optics!” But Optimus gains the upperhand, and throws Megatron to the ground. Kup exclaims “Finish him off, Prime! Do it now!” Optimus then grabs his plasma rifle, and aims it at Megatron, who sees a laser gun lying on the ground just beside him. He then begs for his life, saying “No more, Optimus Prime! Grant me mercy! I beg of you!” Optimus, unsure of how to react, says “You go on without mercy, now plead for it? I thought you were made of sterner stuff.” Megatron grabs the gun, but Hotrod intervenes, and tries to stop him. But his efforts prove futile as not only does he get in the way of Optimus’ aim, but Megatron uses him as a shield, and then blasts Optimus several times, exclaiming “Fall! FALL!!!” Optimus is down, and his injuries are fatal. Megatron then throws Hotrod away, and comes in for the kill, saying “(sigh) I would have waited at eternity for this… It’s over, Prime.” But Optimus, using the last of his strength, manages to land a crushing blow to Megatron with his coupled hands, exclaiming “NEVER” as he knocks him off the platform, and sends him tumbling to the ground below. Optimus tries to stand up, but his injuries are too severe that he collapses. Hotrod then races back into the scene, placing his hands on the injured Optimus, and saying “Optimus… Forgive me…” Well, I forgive him, but unfortunately his haters don’t. Meanwhile, Megatron is on the ground all beaten up. His troops stand before him. Starscream closes in, and smugly mocks Megatron’s helpless state, saying “How do you feel Mighty Megatron?” before kicking him in the midsection. Then he orders Astrotrain to transform and act as transportation for the Decepticons to escape. Megatron begs in a weak tone of voice “Don’t leave me, Soundwave…!” And Soundwave, who seems to be the only one who’s sympathetic towards Megatron (as Soundwave has been one of his most loyal followers for only God knows how long), hears his pleads, and says “As you command, Megatron.” He then carries him over his shoulder, and Astrotrain converts to vehicle mode. The Decepticons then retreat, taking their wounded soldiers with them as they board Astrotrain, who then takes off.

Optimus’ Death:
And now we are treated to what I consider one of the darkest and most heart-breaking moments of my childhood, and no doubt the scene that shocked, traumatized, and saddened fans across the world; the death of Optimus Prime. In this scene, Daniel and the surviving Autobots gather around the dying Optimus as he lies on his death bed. Perceptor scans his body, and concludes that the wounds are fatal. Everybody starts grieving over Prime’s inevitable demise, all the while a sad and dramatic musical track plays in the background. Daniel exclaims “Prime! You can’t die!” Optimus says in a weak tone of voice “Do not grieve. Soon, I shall be one with the Matrix.” Then he turns his attention to Ultra-Magnus, and says “Ultra-Magnus… It’s to you, old friend… I shall pass the Matrix of leadership, as it was passed to me…” But Ultra-Magnus is unsure of himself, and protests, saying “But Prime… I… I’m just a solider… I’m not worthy…” But Optimus concludes “Nor was I… But one day, an Autobot shall rise form our ranks… And use the power of the Matrix, to light… Our darkest hour…” And with those words, Optimus Prime opens his chest compartment to reveal the Matrix inside, then he takes it out, and says his last words (at least for this movie anyway) “Until that day… Till all are one…” Then he drops it, and the Matrix falls into the hands of Hotrod, who poses dramatically with it as the Matrix emits some strange light. This no doubt acts as a bit of foreshadowing concerning Hotrod’s destiny to become Optimus Prime’s successor. But for the time being, we’re lead to believe that Ultra-Magnus is to become the next Autobot leader. And to be honest, I think he had potential, but it was sadly thrown to waste. So anyway, Hotrod then hands the Matrix over to Ultra-Magnus, who reluctantly takes it from his hands, and places it inside his chest compartment. And after that, Optimus’ vital signs begin to fade as he flat-lines. The Autobots, understandably heart-broken and grief-stricken, watch as Optimus Prime finally dies. As the last of his life force fades away, his body blackens (which no doubt is an obvious sign of death), and his head lifelessly tilts to one side. The scene ends with Daniel crying on the dead Optimus’ hand. You know? I like to thank Daniel for channeling my reaction to this scene. Because I was crying too when I saw this scene for the first time as a kid. I was like “No! This can’t be! Optimus Prime? Dead? How could this have happened? Optimus could never die!” Well, that’s what my 5 year old mind said anyway. And while this scene doesn’t bother me as much as it did back then, I can still feel the emotional impact that this scene had on me as a kid. Because Optimus Prime’s death scene is still quite powerful. And unlike his poorly executed death scene in “Revenge of the Fallen”, THIS death scene actually had some weight to it. You see, Optimus Prime was not just a great warrior and leader, but he was also like a father to the Autobots. And when I saw Optimus Prime die in this movie, it felt like we lost a great hero and a respectable father. And for me, this is one of the most dramatic death scenes in a movie alongside Darth Vader’s death in “Return of the Jedi”, or the Terminator’s death in “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”. Yes, it was THAT powerful and dramatic. And that’s one thing Michael Bay has failed to convey in his movies. Now before I go on, there’s one thing I want to discuss. As I said before, it was this scene that caused a LOT of outrage and controversy in the fan community. I once was told that a kid locked himself in his room, and stayed there without any self-nourishment for weeks. And back then, a lot of people blamed Hotrod for the death of Optimus Prime. And you know what? That was my initial reaction at first. And at one time, I used to blame Hotrod for getting Optimus killed. But as I cooled down from my state of rage and frustration, I came to the realization that the ones who are truly to blame for killing Optimus are the script writers. So in the end, I blame the script-writers for Optimus’ death more than I blame Hotrod. But even so, that doesn’t stop the fact that Hotrod has gained a lot of negativity for this, which is probably the reason why he was so poorly treated in recent years, with his only true significance in modern media being in comics and video games. However, Hotrod/Rodimus Prime is not completely and totally despised, as he does have his fans (myself included). But still, this was one of the darkest moments of my childhood. I will say this though; it was Optimus' death that made the character all the more special and charismatic.

Megatron becomes Galvatron:
So anyway, after that tear-inducing and heart-breaking scene, our attention is directed back to Unicron, who is wandering the regions of outer space. He somehow is able to see the events of the very recent past in his computerized brain… Okay, first off, how can he do this? I mean I get that he’s supposed to be like a super advanced alien robot of unknown origins, but how is he able to see events that he didn’t see himself? This kind of indicates that he’s some kind of Transformer God. Then again, Unicron himself is basically the Transformers equivalent of Satan. So I guess it stands to reason that he would have the power of “sight beyond sight”. And so after somehow knowing that the Matrix had only recently been passed onto Ultra-Magnus, the angry Unicron utters a loud thundering roar, which is downright creepy. Meanwhile, Astrotrain is seen flying through space. But he requests that they “jettison some weight” Or he’ll never make it back to Cybertron. Starscream agrees to this, and makes Astrotrain’s request known to the Decepticons. One of the Constructicons exclaims that it is survival of the fittest. Starscream asks “Do I hear a second on that?” to which the surviving Decepticons all shout “I!” Then Starscream turns his attention to the injured Decepticons, asking “And against?” to which the beaten up Decepticons all exclaim weakly “I!” Starscream then concludes “The “I’s” have it!” Then they proceed to dump the beaten up Decepticons out into the void of space, throwing out Skywarp, Thundercracker, and several Insecticons. Starscream carries the injured Megatron in his arms, sarcastically saying with a smug smirk on his face “Oh how it pains me to do this.” Megatron weakly exclaims “Wait! I still function!” But Starscream disagrees, and says “Want a bet?” before throwing Megatron into the void of space, and closing the door shut on him as he floats away. You know, I don’t entirely understand why they had to “jettison some weight” considering that they’re in outer space. I mean in outer space, everything becomes weightless. There’s no gravity in space. But then again I guess they did it because their injured troops were all just dead weight. And I guess the Decepticons don’t like dead weight. But you’d think that they would take the time to mourn Megatron’s loss before moving on. I mean the Decepticons respected him. Not to mention Soundwave and Shockwave were two of his closest followers. But in Starscream’s case, he waited all his life to get rid of Megatron so he could take over. So I guess we really can’t expect any sympathy from him since he’s a backstabbing bastard. So anyway, after disposing of Megatron, Starscream boldly declares that he will take over as leader of the Decepticons. But the Constructicons are against it, and declare that THEY should take over. But Soundwave interrupts them, and says one of his best lines “Soundwave superior. Constructicons inferior.” This remark angers the Constructicons, who exclaim “Who are you calling inferior?! Nobody would follow an uncharismatic bore like you!” But then Soundwave’s cassette robots pop out of his chest, and exclaim “Hey! Nobody calls Soundwave uncharismatic!” The Constructicons then merge into Devastator inside Astrotrain… Okay, logic error here. They are inside Astrotrain. Is there really enough room for them to do that? My logic tells me no, but the movie’s logic says otherwise. However, Rumble and Frenzy easily cause Devastator to collapse by hammering on the floor… Which for some reason doesn’t hurt Astrotrain… And then the Decepticons start fighting each other over who should take over. And no, I don’t mean verbal bickering. They literally engage in violence over who should succeed Megatron. You know, I'm surprised Astrotrain didn't say "ARGH! HEY! CUT IT OUT IN THERE! YOU'RE GIVING ME A PAIN!"

Speaking of whom, our attention is then directed to Megatron and his dead or dying troops, who are floating around aimlessly in space. And just when it seemed like his life had reached its end, Unicron appears in his presence, saying in a creepy and monstrous tone of voice “WELCOME MEGATRON…” the force of his voice pushes Megatron, who grabs hold of one of Unicron’s mandibles to stop himself. Then he asks “Who said that?” to which Unicron replies “I… AM UNICRON…” The sound of Unicron’s monstrous voice blows away Megatron, who then requests “Show yourself!” Unicron then states that he has summoned Megatron for a purpose. This angers Megatron, who exclaims “Nobody summons Megatron!” Unicron replies “Then that pleases me to be the first.” Megatron tells him to state his business, and Unicron gets to the point, saying “This is my command; you are to destroy the Autobot Matrix of Leadership… It is the one thing… THE ONLY THING… That can stand in my way…” Megatron exclaims “You have nothing to fear! I have already crushed Optimus Prime with my bare hands!” Unicron tells him that he’s exaggerating, and Megatron replies “The point is he’s dead! And the Matrix died with him!” But Unicron rebukes him, saying “No… The point is you were a fool… The Matrix has been passed to a new leader… Ultra-Magnus… Destroy it for me…” Megatron asks “Why should I? What’s in it for me?” Unicron concludes “Your bargaining posture is highly dubious. But very well. I will provide you with a new body, and new troops to command.” He then concludes the argument by saying that Megatron now belongs to him. But Megatron protests, and exclaims “I belong to nobody!” To this, Unicron concludes “Perhaps I misjudged you. Proceed your way to oblivion.” And it is here where Megatron undergoes his dramatic transformation into Galvatron. Needless to say, this part is VERY WELL animated! There’s so much detail, there’s flashy lights everywhere, and the special effects are absolutely breath-taking! Now, this wasn’t done with CGI, but the way it’s executed is so spectacular. First there’s like a purplish gray filter that appears over Megatron, followed by an X-ray-like filter where we see his anatomy and endo-skeleton. And then some weird spiraling grid of sorts covers him, and when he emerges, he is reborn with a new body, and a new voice to boot. And rather than being voiced by Frank Welker, he is now voiced by Leonard Nimoy (who by the way has only recently passed on). Unicron now dubs him Galvatron, and he does the same for his fallen troops, transforming them into Scourge, Cyclonus, and the Sweeps. Once again, the special effects in this scene are madly awesome. And still to this day they’re fun to watch. It’s amazing what animators were able to pull off even without the use of CGI like today. And I have to give credit where it’s due. Because no matter how many times I see this one part in the film, I’m still amazed by it. This is without a doubt one of the best scenes in the entire film. Although there is an error I need to point out here. When Unicron gives the Decepticons their new bodies, there were two Cyclonuses. But after this one shot, that second Cyclonus disappears, and he is never seen again. So what happened to him? Who knows? And also, for many years now, fans have often speculated who is who. We already know that Galvatron is a reborn Megatron. But who were Scourge and Cyclonus in their previous lives? Fans have often speculated that Scourge is a reborn Thundercracker, while Cyclonus is a reborn Skywarp. So anyway, after giving them their new bodies, Unicron also gives them a battleship to pilot, and sends him on his way to destroy the Matrix. Galvatron says his first line; “That will rip open Ultra-Magnus and every other Autobot, until the Matrix has been destroyed!” Now, I know I already said this before. But it bears repeating. Leonard Nimoy was the PERFECT voice for Galvatron. No offense to Frank Welker, but I have to be honest, Welker did a terrible job voicing Galvatron in season 3. Nimoy on the other hand did a superb job voicing the character. He made him sound sinister, menacing, and imposing with his deep gruff voice. And in my opinion, that’s how he SHOULD sound. If anybody could voice Galvatron, it was definitely Leonard Nimoy. Now, I understand that Frank had to take over as Galvatron for season 3 since Leonard had other things to do after this movie. But still. And so Galvatron and the newly reborn Decepticons board their ship, and take off. Unicron demands “DESTROY THE MATRIX…” Though, there’s one flaw with this problem. Don’t get me wrong, it works with the film. But… Since Unicron is a gigantic planet eating monster, and since he can see anything that goes on in the known universe, then couldn’t he just make his way over to Earth and do it himself? I mean what’s stopping him? He could easily devour Earth like he did planet Lithone at the beginning. Meh, that’s just me nitpicking.

Galvatron Kills Starscream:
However, Galvatron has some unfinished business to take care of before he carries out Unicron’s orders. Back on planet Cybertron, a ceremony is taking place in which Starscream is being crowned as the king of Decepticons. And for some added humor, the Constructicons are providing some music (despite that some of them don’t have mouths). But Starscream doesn’t take kindly to this, and says “Get on with the ceremony!” The Constructicons are confused, and continue blowing their horns until Starscream destroys their instruments with a single blast from his arm gun. Then one of the Decepticons places the crown on Starscream’s head, and as he is about to declare himself Megatron’s successor, Cyclonus flies into the scene in jet mode. Angry, Starscream exclaims “Who disrupts my coronation?!” Galvatron hops out of Cyclonus, who then converts to robot mode. Racing their way up to Starscream, Galvatron says “Coronation, Starscream? This is bad comedy!” Surprised, Starscream inquires “Megatron? Is that you?!” And it is here were Galvatron says “Here’s a hint!”, transforms into cannon mode, and kills Starscream with a single blast, which literally causes his body to crumble to a pile of rubble and ashes. You know what I think would have made this funny? If a voice was heard saying “Galvatron… Wins… Fatality… Flawless victory…” And so after disposing of him, Starscream’s crown falls down the stairs before Galvatron’s feet, who then crushes it under his heel. I guess Galvatron has had it with Starscream’s bullshit, and decided to put him down for good. Hey, if someone left me for dead, I’d be pissed off as hell too. So I can’t say I blame him for that. But on the other hand, it sucks that they killed Starscream as well. So anyway, as Galvatron stands before the remains of Starscream, he turns around, facing the other Decepticons before him, and asks “Will anyone else attempt to fill his shoes?” Rumble asks “What’d he say his name was?” to which Galvatron proudly declares while raising his blaster “GALVATRON!” The Decepticons cheer him on, chanting his name happily. Hey, at least we know that the Decepticons CAN express other emotions. Not like in the Michael Bay films where they’re all just mindless drones with no personality or character at all. Because character and story development is one thing that the Bay films are sadly devoid of.
