Sylvester the Cat

Description

Here's another personal favorite of mine; Sylvester the Cat. This guy is totally unmistakable by his trademark exclaimation; "Sufferin Succotash!" Sylvester's first appearance was in the cartoon short titled "Life with Feathers" released in 1945. Since then, he has appeared in a number of cartoon shorts, often acting as an adversary for characters like Tweety the Bird and Speedy Gonzales.

In a number of the various cartoon shorts where Sylvester has appeared in, he either appears be a wild stray cat or a domesticated pet who resides in a residence which can be owned by Granny, who of course acts as the guardian for Tweety when Sylvester almost succeeds in catching and eating him. Another such guardian who protects Tweety from Sylvester includes this nameless bulldog character, who closely resembles Spike from Tom and Jerry.

Sylvester's voice equals that of Daffy Duck's slobbery lisp. One defining characteristic that Sylvester has is that he has a lot of pride in himself and doesn't tend to give up easily. Despite (or perhaps because of) his pride and persistence, Sylvester is, with rare exceptions, placed squarely on the "loser" side of the Looney Tunes winner/loser hierarchy. His character is basically that of Wile E. Coyote, and Tom, the bluish gray cat from "Tom and Jerry" in the sense that he chases mice and birds.

In the 1996 film "Space Jam", Sylvester was one of the main stars in the Looney Tunes' team headed by Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan. In one scene in the movie, he used a fishing rod to remove the pants off of an alien team member from the opposing team, exposing that character's butt to the audiences. In recent years, Sylvester has appeared in an episode of Robot Chicken called "Werewolf VS Unicorn". In that episode he took the role of a border guard demonstrating a wired fence that is supposed to keep out illegal immigrants, only to have Speedy Gonzales penetrate through the fence. Like all the other Looney Tunes characters, Sylvester's voice actors vary from time to time, ranging from person to person depending on the circumstances.

Sylvester is the property of Warner Brothers.
