Description

This is a long overdue request which I promised my good friend SilverZeo a while back. This was supposed to be a birthday present for him since the spring of this year. But unfortunately, it was delayed for a while until just recently when I was able to buy some time to work on it. And well, I strongly regret putting this off. But even though this is long overdue, I'm glad I was able to finish this sketch before the end of this year. SilverZeo, if you're reading this, I just want to apologize for the long delay. But I hope you enjoy this regardless.

Anyway, the characters in the picture are Sarah Spencer and Smilin' Don from the 1987 DIC cartoon Dinosaucers. Now for those of you who have never heard of these characters until now, allow me to clue you in. First off, Sarah Spencer is one of the “Secret Scouts”. The Secret Scouts were the Dinosaucers' allies in the show who helped them in their adventures against the Tyranos. Much like how the Autobots had human allies in every different version of the Transformers universe, the Secret Scouts played a similar role in being human allies to the Dinosaucers. Sarah is the sister of Ryan Spencer, who seems to be the unofficial leader of the Secret Scouts. Each of the Scouts had magical power rings that were given to them by the Dinosaucers. These rings would temporarily grant them superhuman powers such as great speed, strength, and agility. However, out of all the Secret Scouts, Sarah was the one who used her power ring the most often. Whereas her brother Ryan never used his power ring at all. She was voiced by Barbara Lynn Redpath.

Smilin' Don was one of the villains in the show who has only appeared in a single episode in the entire series along with his lord and master, “Captain Sabertooth”. He was to Captain Sabertooth what Ankylo was to Genghis Rex; a slow-minded dopey assistant who received constant abuse from his master whenever he screwed up or got out of line. Much like Ankylo, Smilin' Don was unquestionably loyal to his master, and would follow orders without question despite his low level of intelligence. However, unlike Ankylo, who always seemed willing to impress his master by all means, Smilin' Don seemed more like a slave who followed orders unintentionally. In fact, despite being a minion to a greater villain, Smilin' Don seemed more innocent than evil. For this reason, SilverZeo and I came to the conclusion that had Captain Sabertooth and Smilin' Don been given more appearances, they would have had more chance for further development. And not only that, but Smilin' Don probably would've had the chance to have a change of heart and join the side of good if he was given the chance. In fact, now that I think of it, Smilin' Don could have had a chance to turn good if only he were to have a friend by his side to touch his heart and teach him right from wrong. But of course, any rebellious acts against his master would prove fatal given Sabertooth's viciousness and villainy. Still though, that would have been an interesting twist of turns.

Anyway, the illustration as shown here depicts Sarah and Smilin' Don interacting with each other, developing a friendship. And as you can see, they seem to be getting along quite well. Now, in Ankylo's case, there's no doubt in my mind that he would remain loyal to Genghis Rex no matter what. But in Smilin' Don's case, I'm sure that he would be easy to persuade and reason with. Well, anyway, this is my little gift to my good friend SilverZeo. Enjoy, buddy. I hope you like it.

Sarah and Smilin' Don belong to DIC.
